Think of Los Altos and Lakewood as “Homes of the Future — 1940s Style”. Starting at Atherton and Bellflower Streets and extending north as far as the eye can see are modest 2 and 3 bedroom homes mass-produced for returning G.I.s after World War II. Home sizes in these neighborhoods range from about 900 to 1100 sq. ft.–considered ideal for young families back then. Some have been updated over the years, some have not.
Larger lots and lower home prices
The lots in Lakewood and Los Altos are considerably larger than in neighborhoods closer to the beach. There is definitely a more open and spacious feeling in these areas.
And, instead of a 10-minute walk to the beach, it’s a 10-minute drive. The homes, however, are on generally larger lots for a lower price than neighborhoods nearer the ocean.
There are some pockets of custom homes, in particular around Lakewood Village. These homes, however, are from a later era.
Mid-Century Modern homes in Rancho Park
For architectural aficionados, there is a small neighborhood of Mid-century Modern homes designed by Cliff May in the Rancho area near Los Altos. Some are in beautiful original condition, some need attention, and some–unfortunately–have been “remodeled” almost beyond recognition.
Park Estates which is actually in Long Beach is also full of custom mid-century modern residences on large lots. These are sizeable, expensive homes.
