A Mid-Century Modern interior in Long Beach

Mid Century modern
The exterior of this Cliff May designed home has the hallmark vertical siding and a double door entrance.

The homes designed by famed architect Cliff May in the Rancho Park neighborhood of Long Beach were an experiment by the builder.  He was not certain that the then-called Modern homes would have a wide appeal to average American home-buyers.  Up to that point what we now call Mid-Century Modern homes were almost exclusively built for the wealthy.  It turned out these new designs for homes were popular enough that imitations were built nearby.

Unfortunately, many of these homes in Rancho Park have been modified, remodeled, and changed almost beyond recognition.

A Cliff May house in its original state

This one, however, is close to its original state, including such details as the tile and the beautifully-maintained wood paneling.  The interior has post and beam construction with a wood-paneled ceiling.

Mid-century fireplace wall

Floor to ceiling glass flanks the fireplace and the sliding glass doors open to a spacious interior courtyard enclosed on two sides by the home. Back to Mid-Century Modern Homes in Long Beach
